On the outskirts of Busan, there lies a small valley that human feet have not touched in a very long time. The locals call it the Valley of Whispers, and they give it a wide berth. Rumors have long circulated of a voice heard there — low and mournful, hovering just at the edge of hearing whenever someone passed through at dusk.
Long ago, it is said, a small village stood in that valley. Each spring, the villagers would hold rites to appease the spirit of the valley. Then one year, a reckless development scheme erased the village without a trace, and from that time on, strange and troubling things never ceased to happen there.
Once, two bold university students ventured into the valley on a self-appointed investigation. They boasted loudly that they would unravel the legend of the Valley of Whispers once and for all. As the night deepened, they pressed into the heart of the valley — and that was when the voice came. *Turn back… turn back…* They dismissed it as imagination and kept walking.
But the voice drew closer, and the fear that rose in them made them want to turn around. By then, it was too late. The ground gave way beneath their feet and they plunged into a deep bog. They struggled, but the mire only pulled them further down. When the rescue team arrived the following morning, the only trace the two had left behind was a camera. The last footage it had captured was still there — the image shaking violently, and through the noise, the whisper unmistakably clear. *Turn back…*
The valley remains where it has always been. The warnings have only grown more insistent, and no one dares go near the place after sundown. The rumor that the spirit of the valley still keeps its vigil there grows stronger with each passing year.
