The Han River flows carrying countless legends and dark tales within it. Of these, the story most people turned away from was the whisper that rose from the river's deepest depths. It hinted at something beneath the surface that never slept — even as the Han held Seoul in its long, slow embrace.
Late one night, Jisu stood at the riverbank watching moonlight ripple across the water when he heard it. At first he took it for the ordinary sound of the current, but gradually it shifted into something else — a language that made no sense, that could not be made sense of. It was less like a single voice than the murmuring of countless presences, all speaking at once.
Drawn by the sound, Jisu moved closer to the water's edge. At that moment the surface stirred gently, then without warning a vast ripple opened at his feet. Within it, lights glimmered like scattered stars — like the heart of a galaxy seen from very far away. Jisu stood transfixed by that cold radiance and slowly reached out his hand.
Then something emerged from among the lights. It was a thing beyond the reach of human imagination — a creature of countless eyes and writhing tendrils. Standing before it, Jisu felt his body turn to stone and his mind begin to come apart. The thing pressed itself directly into his thoughts and whispered there: the truth of the universe, and its cruelty.
The following morning, Jisu was found on the riverbank. His face was fixed in an expression of absolute terror, and from his lips came a ceaseless murmuring that would not stop. *It is watching us. From there... from beyond...*
The people of Seoul are reluctant to go near the Han River now. They have come to understand that it is not simply a body of water — that something beneath it does not sleep. The Han is not merely a river passing through a city. It is a threshold opening onto a horror without limit, a horror that lies entirely outside the bounds of what human beings are meant to know.
